2025 Ford Mustang GTD : The fastest Road-Legal Mustang Ever

2025 Ford Mustang GTD : The fastest Road-Legal Mustang Ever

The upcoming 2025 Ford Mustang GTD supercar that was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show promises to be the fastest and most powerful Mustang ever created, as well as succeeding the Ford GT as the brand’s halo car.

A highly technological supercar

In order to compete with the best supercars on the market, the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD benefits from numerous technically advanced solutions in terms of chassis, body, and powertrain construction. Starting with the chassis, the Mustang GTD will make use of an active suspension system that can vary ride height and spring rates continuously in order to provide the best handling characteristics for every situation. Due to the mid-engine layout of its powertrain and the relocation of its transaxle to the rear of the car, the Mustang GTD can also count on a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution to improve its handling around track corners. Paired with front tires that are as wide as the rear tires on the former Ford GT, and rear tires even wider still, the GTD’s large Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes allow drivers to brake later before corners in order to extract another measure of performance, contributing to a targeted time of less than 7 minutes around the Nürburgring.

Highly tuned aerodynamics

Aerodynamic forces play a key part in the handling and performance of race cars, which is why their management has been a top priority during the design and engineering stage of the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD. This has resulted in the car being fitted with active flaps that can open and close in order to balance cooling needs with downforce, in addition to the unmistakable rear wing, which is hydraulically controlled to offer the exact amount of grip required by the rear axle. Special cooling ducts for the brakes, the engine, and the rear-mounted transaxle are all part of the complex aerodynamic setup of the Mustang GTD so as to not upset the flow of air while maximizing its cooling potential to prevent mechanical issues during hardcore track sessions.

The most powerful Mustang ever

Of course, such advanced chassis and aero developments can only prove their worth in a car that has an impressively high level of performance, something that the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD will have no trouble achieving. Indeed, this model will be the most powerful Mustang ever created due to its 800-horsepower supercharged 5.2L V8 engine. As mentioned previously, this engine is mid-mounted and it delivers its power to the rear-mounted 8-speed dual-clutch transaxle via a lightweight carbon fibre driveshaft. In order to make the most of this engine’s 7,500 RPM redline, a titanium exhaust system will be available. The limited production run of the 2025 Mustang GTD is scheduled to debut late next year at the Multimatic factory, here in Canada, which previously manufactured the Ford GT.
