The Ford Bronco Sport becomes the first vehicle in the world to use recycled ocean plastic in the construction of its mechanical components. Specifically, the Bronco Sport's wiring harnesses will be constructed from ocean plastics recycled from the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea.
These components help reduce the impact of the 13 million tons of plastic dumped into the world's oceans every year. Recycling this plastic also creates sustainable jobs on a global scale.
"This is another example of Ford leading the charge on sustainability," said Jim Buczkowski, vice president of research and technical member of Henry Ford. "This is a good example of the circular economy, and while these clips are small, they are an important first step in our explorations to use recycled ocean plastics for additional parts in the future."
The harnesses are as strong as those constructed from petroleum plastic. Ford plans to produce several more ocean plastic-based components soon.
