2022 Ford Escape vs. 2022 Hyundai Tucson: still the benchmark

2022 Ford Escape vs. 2022 Hyundai Tucson: still the benchmark

There's no shortage of choice for consumers in the compact SUV segment. In fact, the compact SUV segment has long been the most popular across the industry, except of course for the full-size pickup category. Consequently, it's no surprise that there are a lot of competent players in the niche where the two models we're comparing here, the 2022 Ford Escape and the 2022 Hyundai Tucson, operate.

And since we're dealing with two interesting vehicles, let's see how to separate the forces to find out which one represents the best buy.

The drive

Let's start with what is perhaps the most important element. The driving experience with any vehicle is a determining factor. While Hyundai's model does very well in this regard, it's worth noting here that the new generation Ford Escape is simply extraordinary in this regard. In fact, when you take the reins of the 2022 Escape, you're in the driver's seat of the most fun-to-drive SUV in its class. A test drive will convince you of that.

The plug-in hybrid version

Each of the two models compared is available with a power cord. Ford offers 60 km of all-electric range. In the Hyundai camp, the Tucson PHEV's range is set at 53 km. That's interesting in each case, but why settle for less with Hyundai?

Powertrains

Mechanically, a lot of choice awaits us with these two models. There are actually three mills on the Ford side, two on the Hyundai side. The additional proposition offered by Ford makes all the difference. It comes in the form of a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which suggests 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Needless to say, when it comes to performance, the fun is behind the wheel of the Escape.
