2020 Ford Explorer vs 2020 Honda Pilot

2020 Ford Explorer vs 2020 Honda Pilot

If you’ve got an average Canadian family, then you’ve got plenty of people and stuff to carry with you everywhere you go. The 3-row SUV segment is booming and bursting at the seams with new and relevant entries. Although there are numerous options, the Ford Explorer stands out as pilar among SUVs on the market. The Honda Pilot has also positioned itself as a viable alternative however there is only one Explorer.

Ford’s experience in building trucks and SUVs is unmatched and the results of this expertise is clear. Ford’s intent is to offer options to its Explorer customers which explains why there are three distinct powertrains to select from compared to only one for the Pilot. The 2020 Honda Pilot is powered by a 280-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 mated to either a 6-speed or 9-speed automatic transmission. The Ford is delivered with a standard 300-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-litre 4-cylinder engine matched to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Alternatively, a 3.3-litre hybrid V6 provides 318 horsepower, remarkable fuel efficiency and a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs, equal to that of the Pilot.

Performance enthusiast who crave driving pleasure to go along with all the offered versatility can opt for the Platinum or extra-potent ST trims, both equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 with 365 or 400 horsepower.

Both SUVs include as standard comfortable seating for 7 occupants and an impressively long list of included features such as tri-zone electronic temperature control. However, Ford takes it a step further with an extremely convenient power liftgate which is only available on a higher more expensive trim on the Pilot. Technology levels are also unequal. Upper Explorer trims can be fitted with a surprising 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and audiophile will delight in the 12-speaker B&O Sound system by Bang & Olufsen.

Clearly, the Ford Explorer offers more value and equipment, and is the wiser choice. However, if you’re not certain, here’s a detail that may sway your decision. Although both SUVs are physically attractive in their own right, the first few Pilot trims are offered in only in three or four basic colours. Buyers need to select an upper trim to get access to six different shades. Ford Explorer buyers can select from ten different hues in the most basic trim.

There are no two ways about it, Ford has designed to Explorer to please Canadian families.
